Tomato Tomäto was, in short, born for the love of local food.
Garden Fresh Vegetables, a 10 acre greenhouse in O’Neill NE, needed an outlet to distribute tomatoes and cucumbers in the Omaha metro area. They started distributing the tomatoes and cucumbers in out of our store’s current location in May of 2008. As our popularity grew, regular hours were set in order to accommodate individuals wanting to purchase the produce. The storefront you see today consisted merely of a white table with some tomatoes on it and a small fridge with some cucumbers inside.
Garden Fresh Vegetables started attending the Village Pointe farmers market and it was there they spoke with other vendors about the possibilities of starting a year around indoor farmers market. The response was very positive all around.
By June of 2008, there were 6 vendors with product to sell in the store. It was, and still is, all on consignment. This group of people was held together by a desire to connect consumers directly to farmers, and a love of local fresh food year around.
Currently, the list of vendors at Tomato Tomäto numbers over 30 and continues to grow as people are continuing to find new and innovative ways to grow and produce high quality local foods. Tomato Tomäto is honored to serve both the farms and consumers on the journey to buying healthy, fresh and local.
